New Zealand Medicines Terminology Recommendation Report HISO 10024

A Medicines Terminology is essentially a list of medicines based on a standardised identification (coding), naming and description system.

An expert advisory committee, consisting of representatives from across the health and disability sector, was established last year to consider options for establishing a Medicines Terminology for New Zealand. The committee reviewed the various options currently in use internationally and the existing requirements in New Zealand. The recommended best way forward for the NZ health and disability sector is the adoption and adaptation of the SNOMED CT based Australian Medicines Terminology.

The report informs those with an interest in, or who will be impacted by, the introduction of a Medicines Terminology standard in New Zealand.
